Santa Fe
"The Japanese have a word, 'natsukashi,' which means 'a thinking back to pleasant past events coupled with a desire to go back to that special place.' As an artist, I find myself wanting both to recapture my experiences and to transform them. I tried to use photographs that accurately describe 'the moment' that all travelers experience, but also to create an extension of that moment, to integrate it with words and people and objects and impressions that lingered."
That is how the artist Marianne Vecsey describes the inspiration for her "Travels" series of 20 mixed-medium pieces that chronicled her journeys around the world. With her own photographs as a starting point, she expands the scene outward using watercolors, pencil and collage to create a world that exists somewhere between reality, interpretation, memory and sensation.
